kicking off the year in teshcasts in 2014 is this, a special mix put together by bnjmn to represent what you might be treated to at the night he runs with pals and peers.
it’s called pride of gombe, and the next one is at chesters, berlin, on friday 24th january, with previous instalments having gone down last year. playing at the night as well as the rush hour producer will be don’t be afraid man mr beatnick, previous teshcast star samoyed and idiosyncratic glum boss and werk discs alumni lukid, along with a man who has released some of the latter two’s music on his astro:dynamics label, aka rekordah.

you’ve done these nights before, are they a regular thing now?
we’ve done 3 nights before in london, this is the first time in berlin. we try and do it a few times a year if everyone’s available
why chose chesters? for those who don’t know, what’s it like?
i was there a few weeks ago and saw vaghe stelle who played quite an experimental set and people were really into it. then the dj playing after him was playing wiley, which was when it clicked that it might be the right venue to do a pride of gombe night there.
what is the aim and vibe – is it to showcase your own exclusives, champion that specific 78-79 afro funk bit of your record collection, ‘educate people’ or simply for your own amusement?
the vibe is about getting together as friends and playing music we’d all like to hear, which we might not get the chance to play in a “regular” club setting. plenty of exclusives and obscure bits and we usually all get together at the end and do some kind’ve fivesome ass to ass b2b thing.
will there ever be any guests, if this turns out to be a regular thing?
we have a special guest who is going to be opening the night on the 24th. we will post some hints on the facebook page nearer the time. definitely worth getting down early for
tell us about the people involved…
the 5 people involved are lukid, mr beatnick, samoyed, rekordah and myself. we’ve all been friends for quite a while, even before meeting in person we were sending eachother music. then a mutual love of goulash and friday night bowling made us hang out more, and it seemed like the next logical step to put on a night together.
how did you lot hook up and what made you decide to do this?
i think it was myspace that brought us together back in the days, but i’m not quite sure. lukid had a monday night ustream which we all tuned into and got drunk alone in our bedrooms to. i was offered to do a night at the waiting room in the summer of 2012 and it only felt right to do it with these guys.
do you each bring different things to the table, musically, or do you share really similar tastes or?
i would say we all have our own sound and style that comes naturally but what we all have in common is a broad taste in a lot of different types of music – a lot that overlaps between us, and we like to show that at the night.
anything to add about the mix you’ve done us?
basically everyone sent me a few tracks each and i tried to tie it all together. i think it’s a pretty good representation of the different flavours you’ll hear at a pride of gombe night, or not depending on how we feel.
